Silverpill Lodge is situated in the old market town of Chepstow, 110 miles from London. It is at the gateway to Wales and is in Monmouthshire.
The construction of Chepstow’s Norman Castle, ordered by William the Conqueror in 1067, is two minutes walk from the property. The town centre is five minutes walk away. St. Ann Street used to be called Silverpill Lane and the area of water under the cliffs, opposite Brunel’s old gunpowder store, is known as Silverpill. Fishing for salmon in this area by the use of “Stop Boats” was carried out for centuries but finally ceased in the 1980’s. Indeed, Silverpill Lodge was the house occupied by the water bailiff who was responsible for ensuring that salmon poachers were regulated! The Chartist movement was active in Chepstow and a band of these activists was rounded up and deported to Tasmania in 1840, under guard from the riverfront.
Chepstow enjoys excellent Motorway links with the rest of the United Kingdom. The Celtic Manor Championship golf course is 15 miles away with a direct link via the M48 and M4. Traffic is usually light and journey times are short at about 15 minutes. Cardiff, the capitol city of Wales, is another 15 minutes distant with its attractive, new shopping area and historical landmarks. Bristol is reached by crossing the River Severn on the M48 motorway in the opposite direction. It is a vibrant city with a nautical history that extends back to the 10th Century. The Spa towns of Bath and Cheltenham are approached via the M4 and M5 Motorways within 40 minutes.
The beautiful Wye Valley and the Royal Forest of Dean are 10 minutes away and the autumn is a particularly good time of year when their beauty is enhanced by the season.
Chepstow is fortunate to be surrounded by other highly regarded golf courses. The Marriott St. Pierre is just outside the town and is well known for its two championship courses. Others include the Rolls course at Monmouth, Dewstow at Caldicot which is near to the Castle and Thornbury, just across the first of the two Severn Bridges. Bell’s Club in the Royal Forest of Dean and the nine hole public course at Lydney are also available.
